If I were inclined to purchase and possibly race a Formula 1 RC car next year, what are the specs required in the class and where is the best place to purchase?

Possibly looking at a F104 Pro VerII......

And probably more importantly... is there a class for these available?

There are a few around, and I'm keen to get racing next year. I've about given up on making my FGX competitive, but i'll keep running that until the class gets good numbers. Then I'm looking at something like the F1R2 (Exotek based on an F104 chassis).

We were running blinky 17.5, but I believe we are moving the the national rule set for F1 so the cars are on the same spec as the sydney clubs, which is 21.5 blinky.

As far as purchasing, I'm not sure who has them locally I'm not sure who as the tamiya kits, but the 3Racing cars (FGX and F113) are available through nothern beaches hobby center. OS, RCMART, or RCMushroom

I would like to put forward a recommendation that we use the calendar on this website to schedule particular race catergories such as F1, 12th scale and VTA etc on a particular race date so that everyone can have prior knowledge of a class running and that way it may boost numbers for that class.

I was thinking some thing like VTA on the first weekend of February and say F1 on the 3rd weekend in March etc. (example only) . Obviously this should not detract  those wanting to race either class at anyother time.

What do others think?

I agree Anthony, that's a great idea.

Alternatively (or additionally) we could run F1 as an alternative race format (1x 5min qually, 1x 10min race) and run it along side the actual F1 WC. If we ran the qually first up and last race of the day you could feasibly run it as a 3rd class. That way it wouldn't detract from other classes so much.

Just a idea though.

WE may have to disable your DRS though, in the interest of fair play!

I'm moving to Newcastle in the first week of Jan and I've got a F113 and M05L only so that's what I run when you have day's for them.

When I bought my F113 it came with Speed Passion 17.5 combo then I had to buy the 21.5 motor to suit the rules.  I've got FDR 2.9

Anyone interested in running an f1 championship that coincides with the actual f1 world championship? Just for a bit of fun...

Maybe score points the same as the real championship, only count finals, and only race meetings that line up to f1 race weekends?

That would mean our first round will be this weekend :-).

Same as full scale f1? Yeah. If there's enough cars for a B Final then points continue on. So if we have an 8 car main, all those cars are scored from 25pts for first, down to the 4pts for 8th. First in the B would get 2pts, and 2nd 1pt.

Sounds good to me, anyone else keen to try their hand tomorrow? Maybe even run what some Sydney clubs have done, reduce to 2 qualifying heats, with a long final of say 10 or 15 mins. The cars can definitely handle it!

Thanks guys :-).

Brendan, I love the idea of a long final. Cars can easily do 15mins. My fat, overgeared fgx made 3 qualifier runs at Maitland last meeting off just one shorty (4200) pack. It may have done 4, but I had to leave early. I'm sure the more nimble direct drive cars would do more.
